This report sets out the challenges facing people with autism in older age – as related by them and the people who support them. It also makes recommendations on how central and local government can help to meet these challenges to make sure all older adults with autism can live the life they choose.
Until now, older people with autism have been largely neglected in policy, research and service provision. This needs to change. Having autism can magnify the challenges older age can bring, whilst older age can increase the difficulties people with autism face.
The report is based on interviews, focus groups and surveys with older people with autism and their families, and the work of the Autism and Ageing Commission.
